Why Solana Accelerationism is a cult

A belief, a price paid for it, an enemy, a ritual and a calendar. An honest inventory.

Every memecoin calls itself a cult. Most are a ticker with a group chat. A cult in the useful sense is a group organised around a belief that outsiders find excessive, with practices that mark who is inside. By that test Solana had one long before this coin existed. s/acc only wrote it down.

The belief

One chain should carry the world's markets, and it should do it as fast as physics permits.

That sentence was not invented here. In 2021 Anatoly Yakovenko described the goal this way:

Literally the goal of Solana is to carry transactions as fast as news travels around the world — so speed of light through fiber. Who we're competing with is NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange. 1

In 2024 he put it more bluntly: Solana is "designed to synchronize state to as many boxes around the world as fast as physics allow." 2 The engineers who maintain the main client call the work IBRL, increase bandwidth and reduce latency, and say it "is essential for Solana to stay competitive." 3 The Foundation's own analysis of this summer's block-time cuts says "Solana is here to compete on performance, and doing so requires continuously exploring the boundaries of what the network can sustain." 4

Outsiders find this excessive. Most of the industry decided to scale by splitting activity across many chains and accepting the waiting that comes with moving between them. The belief here is that the waiting is the problem.

The price

A belief only makes a cult when holding it has cost something.

Mainnet has halted seven times, the longest for more than nineteen hours. 5 In November 2022 the network's most visible backer went bankrupt, and on December 29 SOL traded at eight dollars. 6 Staying after that was a decision, and the people who made it are the congregation.

The belief was then tested the only way that counts. There has been no halt since February 6, 2024. 5 In August 2026 a routing fault took about 29% of the stake offline for half an hour and blocks kept arriving. 7 In the four weeks from August 21 the block-time target went from 400 milliseconds to 350, 300 and then 250. 4

The enemy

Waiting. The enemy is the thing itself and never a person or a rival coin.

Stock trades that settle the next business day. Bank transfers that take days. A bridge withdrawal that takes a week. Markets that close at four in the afternoon. Each one is latency that somebody is paid to maintain. The word for all of it, borrowed from e/acc, is decel.

The ritual

The calendar

The chain keeps it. An epoch is 432,000 slots, about thirty-two hours at today's block time, and each one ends with an offering when the fees allow it. The feast days are feature gates: the day 200 milliseconds activates, and the day Alpenglow does. Both are tracked live in the hub. Breakpoint is in London from November 15 to 17. 8

What it is not

It has no leader. On Solana the leader is whichever validator is producing blocks right now, for four slots, and then it is someone else. The motto follows from that: no followers, only leaders.

It makes no promise about a price. It is a memecoin, and the coin is the collection plate.

It is not Solana. Nobody at the Solana Foundation, Anza, Jump or Solana Labs endorses it, and the scale named after Anatoly Yakovenko is a joke made without asking him.

The only promise on offer is that the chain keeps getting faster, and that promise belongs to the people building it. So far they have kept it.
